#2 Devon Kollasch with a fantastic catch

After Denver’s big 12-2 win against Hudson earlier in the week, the Cyclones advanced to play Dike New Hartford in the district championship. The talented Wolverines used a combination of great defense and offense to overpower the Cyclones early and maintain control throughout the duration of the game. Congratulations to Dike-New Hartford head coach Sean Leonard and his assistant coaches, players, administration, and fans on advancing to the sub-state matchup. Congratulations also goes to Denver’s coaches and players for their great season and fighting until the very end.

In the first inning, the Wolverines got off to a blazing start. #5 Reece Beuter pitched for the Wolverines and struck out the first 2 out of 3 Cyclones at the plate. On the other side of the ball, #11 Bryce Phelps was pitching for the Cyclones. For the Wolverines, after #11 Parker Kiewiet got on after a single, #6 Drew Sonnenberg was walked, and #5 Reece Beuter was walked, #4 Zak Wauters hit a double that brought in all 3 of the previous runners and put Dike up 3-0. After 2 more walks, #9 Nathan Moore hit a single that drove in another 2 runs and made the score 5-0 in the Wolverine’s favor. #11 Parker Kiewiet hit another single after this that drove in another run, making the score 6-0. After this, a pitching change occurred for the Cyclones, #14 Braden Powers was brought into the game to pitch. Powers was able to get the last two outs after a sacrificial fly from #6 Drew Sonnenberg and a fly out, making the score 8-0 after 1 inning.

For the next few innings, the Cyclones and Wolverines went back and forth, neither team being able to score or get many hits. The next score occurred in the bottom of the 5th inning, after #6 Drew Sonnenberg was walked with the bases loaded, a run was walked in and put the Wolverines up another run with the score at 9-0. The Cyclones scored their lone run of the game in the following inning, after #14 Braden Powers doubled, #7 Nathan Eggena was walked, and #6 Cale Neundorf singled, #4 Kaden Miller was hit by a pitch that brought a run in to make the final score of 9-1.
